A PORTRAIT OF PAIN

ISAIAH 52:14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men.

Everything about our lord astonished us. And that is to be expected, for he was not mere man but God in man’s likeness. His incarnation was astonishing, both as fact and in the method by which it was accomplished. His life was astonishing in its goodness, its simplicity, its poverty, its power, its humility and in its majesty. Having a Peaceful State of Mind

But our text point out an astonishing truth about our lord – a fact so remarkable and heart-rending that we shall need divine help to understand it: His visage (face, countenance or look) was so marred more than any man…’ literally, this means that Jesus’ appearance was so marred that it was not that of a man.

We recoil at this thought. We think of our blessed redeemer as a handsome, noble-looking Person and we cannot bring ourselves to think of him as marred, deformed, and distorted and disfigures. Love moves us to sing of “beautiful Savior” but Scriptures show to us a marred Man of Sorrows  a portrait of pain which caused the Infinite Father to turn His face!.  Persevere

We’re told that “the lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all...” our Lord was marred that we might be spared. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). Think of it! Jesus was crucified that we might be glorified! Will You Still Trust Me?

Dear friend, the marred face of our redeemer becomes beautiful to us as we remember it was for us. Amen.
